Plan Your Hike: Upper to Lower Falls

The hike between the falls is just over four (4) miles in length.  A heavily used trail, the tread is very wide and there is little or no vegetation.  The trail parallells the river, you are rarely out of eyesight of the mighty Dark Waters.

The trail is riddled with roots and rocks, you need to watch where you walk as there is a trip hazard with every footstep.  It also has its share of moderately steep climbs and descents.

A conditioned backpacker can hike this stretch in under two hours.  It is probably best to budget one mile an hour if you have small children.

Be prepared and wear sturdy footwear (no sandalls) and bring with you the ten essentials (list to right).

Keep your eyes open for bald eagles, river otters, beaver, and even an occasional moose!

This is probably the busiest segment of the North Country Trail.  Don't be surprised if you see a backpacker!

On Every Hike, carry the ten essentials:
1) Map and Compass
2) Water
3) Food
4) Signal Maker
5) Lighter/matches
6) Flashlight
7) Extra clothes
8) First Aid Kit
9) Knife
10) Raingear
